The First Signs

When George was 16 months old we noticed a worrying head / neck twitch.  I turned to Dr Google and was horrified when Tourette’s was coming up as a possibility.  Scared silly I took him along to our GP, who reassured me that tics are very common in young children and most will grow out of it.  Phew, another sigh of relief.

Our attention was then elsewhere, as we discovered after 6 months of trying again, we were going to have a brother or sister for George.  This time things would be ok as I was started on the daily heparin injections immediately. We excitedly went along for a 6 week scan in early December and were told the news things weren’t progressing, there was a sac and a baby but too small to detect a heartbeat.  An anxious week went by before we could be re-scanned and this time there was a baby with a heartbeat, although still measuring small for dates.  Several scans later and we were told the news this little one had not made it.

I threw myself into enjoying time with George, now a boisterous toddler.  He was walking from the age of 11 months he was now able to run off at a moment’s notice so kept us very busy.  At home and at toddler groups we began to notice his behaviour was becoming rather difficult.  He would throw objects in temper and seemed to be very angry a lot of the time, was this the terrible twos arriving early?

When George was 21 months old I contacted the health visitor who arranged for the nursery nurse on their team to visit us at home to suggest a few tactics.  We followed her advice and followed a positive parenting approach whereby we praised the good behaviour and ignored the bad.
